FAQ
Got questions about diabetes nutrition? Here are the answers to what I hear most often from patients and followers.
YES. Your brain runs on glucose, which comes from carbohydrates. You need carbs to function. The key is choosing complex carbs (whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables), finding your right portions, and pairing them with protein and healthy fats. Cutting out all carbs isn't sustainable, healthy, or necessary for good diabetes management.
No. There is no cure for diabetes. Some supplements may have modest effects on blood sugar (5-10 mg/dL), but they don't replace medication or proper nutrition therapy. Be especially skeptical of anyone SELLING you a cure - that's a major red flag.
It's more complicated than that. Type 2 diabetes is multifactorial, meaning many things contribute: genetics, insulin resistance, inflammation, access to healthcare, socioeconomic factors, and yes, diet. But it's not just about sugar. Blaming people for their diabetes doesn't help - compassionate, individualized care does.
Absolutely. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro are powerful tools, but they're not magic pills. You still need nutrition therapy to manage side effects, maintain adequate protein intake, prevent nutrient deficiencies, and develop sustainable eating habits for when you stop the medication. Insurance covers nutrition therapy - use it.
